Mirra 2 - The Redesign

In the 20 years since the Mirra Chair was introduced, the designers of Studio 7.5 have evaluated and updated their original design twice, incorporating great materials but less of them—and never at the expense of performance. The human body is meant to move, and the more you’re in motion, the more you need support that moves with you.

Rethinking an original, again

Mirra was designed as a highly individualized work chair that supports agile work, and agile work has only increased over time. Still, the designers of Studio 7.5 took the time to test the validity of the design and its component parts using full-scale models, as they always do. Every piece of the chair received this tactile, real-world treatment until the most elegant solutions for each piece emerged. Studio 7.5 retained the athletic attitude and intuitive adjustments of the original, setting out to improve its sustainability and performance while maintaining its essential form.

Less material, used intelligently

When it launched in 2003, the Mirra Chair was the first office chair designed to meet our Design for the Environment protocols, which were developed in collaboration with international environmental experts at MBDC, the creators of the Cradle-to-Cradle Certified® Products Program. We’ve been making it more sustainable ever since.

In 2013, Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 focused on dematerialization—ensuring that “every molecule counts.” The result was Mirra 2, a chair 30 percent lighter than the original.

In 2024 we changed the nylon base and spine to 100 percent recycled material, further reducing Mirra 2's carbon footprint .
