City of San Diego Pacific Highland Ranch Library

G|M partnered with the City of San Diego, EC Constructors, and Hannah Gabriel Wells to redesign a 212,000-square-foot library, blending functionality with modern design. The space incorporates a vibrant color palette of blues, greens, and teal, creating an exciting atmosphere for the community. The project revisited the design to accommodate post-pandemic needs, offering flexibility and a forward-thinking approach to library spaces.

The project features furniture from top brands, including Herman Miller (Canvas private office, Verus task chairs, Layout Studio conference tables), Arcadia (Achella lounge), Babmar (Amber outdoor lounge), Bernhardt (Zip and Mitt Loop lounges, Yuno tables, Matera conference tables), and Coalesse (Exponents lectern). Other contributors include Davis (A-chair, Sachet chairs), ERG International (Parma parsons tables), Forms+Surfaces (Avivo chairs and tables), Hightower (Gimbal rocker), Janus et Cie (Forest outdoor chair), Knoll (Risom kids chairs), Loll (Adirondack and kids furniture), Stylex (Verve chairs), Versteel (Maker stools), Palmieri (Navigate desk), QCP (custom concrete table), SitOnIt (Whit conference chairs), and Kimball (Parings Perch seating).

The redesign features a variety of functional areas, both indoor and outdoor, to cater to the diverse needs of the community. Outdoor spaces include the entry court, reading porch, and civic court, offering areas for relaxation and social interaction. Inside, the library includes a multipurpose room, open library sections for fiction and nonfiction, seven conference rooms, as well as dedicated spaces for teens, kids, and staff, including a break room, private office, and maker space for creative activities.

Hannah Gabriel Wells’ design aimed to create a modern, community-focused library. The blend of vibrant colors, open sightlines, and high ceilings contributes to an inviting atmosphere. The library caters to evolving community needs by prioritizing flexibility and offering spaces for both learning and social interaction.

The combination of bold colors, contemporary furniture, and architectural features creates a stunning and functional library. G|M’s collaboration has resulted in a dynamic space that meets the needs of the community while looking ahead to the future of public libraries.
